Ice Edge Cafe at Simon Plaza in Kovan, is one such cafe that exudes joy and satisfaction. Thanks to a very special guest, who took the trouble to bring winekaki and myself there.
The exterior is actually unpretentious and one would have expected very standard cafe fare within, but nothing is further from this once you step in.
The owner, Damien, is equally unpretentious and is indeed, a very friendly chap who knows the importance of good quality food. Ice Edge serves largely Italian fare, mixed with an assortment of Western classics.

| Deep Fried Calamari |
We started off with this excellent plate of calamari. The batter was nicely flaky without too overdone, and the texture was tender without ever tasting rubbery. I was immediately surprised at how good this cafe was going to get.

| Aglo Olio Seafood Spaghetti |
They serve quite a number of pastas, but I was informed this aglo olio dish is their best seller. And indeed, for a cafe, the pasta was really well done. Generous amounts of garlic flavored the dish very well, and there was a nice smokiness to the dish, meaning the chef really controlled the pan heat well.

| BBQ Pork Ribs |
I am normally not a fan of any kind BBQ ribs, but I must admit, this one had me sold. The BBQ sauce was nicely balanced, not too tangy and not overly sweet. The meat itself was amazing, and it was literally falling off the bones and moist and tender within. Lovely!

| Gnocchi in Mushroom Cream |
My favorite dish of the day was this beautifully concocted gnocchi in mushroom cream. They handmade the potato pasta themselves and it was clearly evident in the flavors. Not too floury tasting, the gnocchi melted easily in the mouth and the mushroom cream sauce had that rich earthy flavors from the mushrooms. This was really delicious!

| Wide Range of Gelato Selections |
The owner informed us that they originally started as a gelato shop, and we were brought behind to see their gelato machine. They had some really great tasting gelato for sure, and it is still a best seller here.
All in all, we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food here, which could easily put a number of top restaurants to shame with the quality of their pastas. Certainly, this makes a far superior alternative to the BakerInnz and Coffee Clubs flooding Singapore these days.
