Rubato With Video

2012 Latest update: Chef Peter has moved on and started his own restaurant called Pietro at Jalan Kelulut.

Pauline came home one night with a very excited look on her face, and this was due to the fact that she had just discovered a delightful new Italian restaurant near her workplace.

Rubato was the simple name of this place, and it is run and owned by a very young yet remarkable young man by the name of Marcus. It is located within Jalan Peminpin, just about 10 minutes walk from Marymount MRT.

All the classic furnishings of an elegant Italian restaurant can be found here, and Marcus is a very affable and pleasant owner who is very passionate about both his business and his food.

When we were there one Saturday afternoon, we could not help but feel utterly at ease and absolutely cosy within the modern Italian setting. Marcus pointed out that he imported a number of the furniture and furnishings directly from Italy, and it really showed.

But no amount of great decor would matter if the food did not live up, and fortunately, we were almost blown away by the great Italian fare on offer here. Almost every dish was a pleasant surprise, and more than lived up to our expectations.

Parma Ham Wrapped Breadsticks

This classic Italian appetizer was really pretty to look at. Garnished with cherry tomatoes, the salty nature of the parma ham worked really well with the crunchy breadsticks and was a wonderful way to start any Italian meal.

Organic Mushroom Soup

We shared the organic mushroom soup and this was a very delicious and finely balanced mushroom broth, lightly infused with bits of organic mushroom for texture. Unlike some mushroom soups, it was not overly bitter from poorly fried garlic, but instead, retained a delicate mushroom flavor and was blended well enough to be smooth yet slightly crunchy still.

Seafood Linguine in Parchment Paper

This was one of their house specialties, and it was very nicely done. The linguine was well cooked, and there was a generous portion of seafood consisting of shrimp and mussel. The tomato sauce was also just about right, not too tangy or sour, and had enough sweetness without being overpowering. It could have done with a touch more herbs though.

Pan Fried Ribeye

The surprise of the day was the pan fried ribeye that looked amazingly gorgeous. Thankfully, it tasted just as good, if not, better. The ribeye was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and when I visit most Italian places, I usually do not expect great steak or meat dishes. In Rubato, this seems to be the exception as the ribeye was both beautiful to look at and taste as well. Pauline loved it.

Chocolate Fondant

At Marcus's suggestion, we had the rum filled chocolate fondant, and this was a delicious dessert. The fondant was perfectly baked, and the texture was fragrant and almost crust like on the outside. But once we broke the center of it with our spoon, the beautiful rum chocolate oozed out most sinfully and the perfect pairing with the vanilla ice cream had us wanting for more in the end.

I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this meal here, as I have not been a big fan of Italian fare here in Singapore. That is probably due to the fact that once you been to Italy, you really only crave for Italian food in its homeland where they can get fresh produce and ingredients, which is what great Italian food is all about.

Chef Peter Neo

The other surprise we had was when we discovered that the head chef was not Italian, but a local chef who has worked in a number of notable Italian restaurants here. Chef Peter Neo had a nice chat with us, and through our conversation, I discovered he was a very passionate and equally inventive cook.

Seeing him in action in the kitchen was also fascinating as he is clearly very into his craft and for an Italian outlet, Chef Peter takes more care to garnish his plate than the average Italian chef. We were treated to really beautiful plated dishes here.

The only thing we would probably want to see is perhaps more set menus for lunch crowds, as the a la carte menu was slightly on the high side for an eatery in this neighbourhood.

Nevertheless, it was still very good value for money, and despite the fact that they had only opened for only a month or 2, Rubato is definitely on the right track with both its food and service.

Rubato is a definite recommendation from the Silver Chef, and the service is nothing short of exemplary. The food is of a very high benchmark, not just by Italian standards, but by any restaurant standard.

Lisa: I'm torn. I really LOVE them on Juliette Lewis! That woman rocks this look out! But I think I love it so much on her because I like this look in accessories. The headbands, the earrings, even the shoes I feel are easy for a lot of people and ages to wear and have it look amazing. Now the skirt and the jacket are a different story. Like fur, these items add bulk. I'm not sure I'd try these. How do you wash them? What happenes if it's raining and they get wet? They just don't seem practicle. But I do think the models above look nice in them. So you see, I'm torn. What do you think? I'm guessing guys are like "what the hell?!" lol

Ryan: Even though she's a crazy Scientologist, those Juliette Lewis pics are hot in that bohemian/free-spirit/Pocahantas kind-of-way. You have to be really fearless to pull this look off confidently though (I would know - I once spent an entire summer rock tour wearing a thin, striped scarf as a pirate headband. I was quite obviously an insane person at the time). But if you CAN pull it off, you're probably crazy hot (as well as totally, utterly CRAZY). Can't say much about the jacket though- I agree with wifey that they're bulky and unflattering. Lastly, I say keep the shoes - they whisper "free spirit" without shouting "I'll eventually key your car and burn your apartment down."

Purse: Charming Charlie

I had an amazing birthday this year! My hubby watched the kiddos and I went out for a sushi lunch and shopping trip with mother-in-law. Who has never been to Charming Charlie? Before this day I had never been either, but now I am in love with this store! The best way to explain it would be it's like Claire's for adults! It has jewelry, scarfs, hats, sun glasses, purses, and a few clothing items. I went nuts!!! I got quite a few new cocktail rings (at $4.97 why wouldn't you buy lots?!), 2 other tops, and a really great hat I can not wait to wear!

After I got home I got dressed in this outfit and me and the hubby went out to dinner and a movie! If you have not seen Unknown yet go see it! It was AMAZING! All and all it was a really great day! Thanks to everyone for all the B-day wishes! I was overwhelmed with the amount of you who emailed, facebooked, tweeted, and texted me! I felt the love! ;)

See, I have been wearing some of the closet swap items! It just so happened that on the above days no one was around to take my picture. I also couldn't find my tripod, and on all days my kids just happen to be out of their minds at the exact time that wanted to take said pictures! Ahhh, the joys of small children! I am still figuring out this super mom/weekly blog writer stuff! lol

Kok Kee Wanton Noodle With Video

After going to 51 Kovan Wanton Noodle, winekaki was anxious to bring me to his personal favorite wanton noodle place, found in Lavender Food Market.

Kok Kee Wanton Noodle is run by an elderly couple, and has been quite notable. This was pretty much endorsed by the fact that there was always a queue when we were there during the off peak hours of 3pm in the afternoon.

We settled ourselves at a table nearby and proceeded to have our lunch of wanton noodles and a bowl of shrimp dumplings. And, I was certainly was not disappointed.

Wanton Noodle

The thing that struck me about this plate of noodles was how moist the noodles were. It seems that they were drenched in a broth underneath and was thus, a bit more soggy than the usual wanton mee you find.

The broth based noodles were, however, very flavorsome and slightly sweet. The wantons were definitely value for money here as they were rather huge and had a great seasoning and filling inside.

Shrimp Dumpling Soup

Our separate bowl of shrimp dumpling soup was equally delicious. The broth had a similar taste to the noodles and thus, the sweetness of the chicken stock and I suspect, mushrooms really came through without ever being too overpowering.

If I had thought the wantons were huge, the shrimp dumplings were humongous! The shrimp meat were clearly evident and were beautifully seasoned. The texture was nice and had a great bite and crunch to it.

A Great Meal

I must admit, this was a really enjoyable meal and reminded me of my childhood when I used to have a really nice chicken noodle in River Valley that came with an equally wonderful shrimp dumpling soup. That stall has since closed and I am not sure if they have resurfaced elsewhere.

In the meantime, I am glad to discover Kok Kee and 51 Kovan to curb my craving for a good wanton noodle plate. This week has been a relevation of sorts for me for great noodle places and with Punggol Noodles inclusive, I think silverchef has no lack of noodle places to go for now.

Crab Cakes

This is a budget friendly dinner
and you'll eat up the FLAVOR!

This recipe makes 9 crab cakes
to serve 4.

Crab Cakes
2 pkgs. frozen imitation crab meat
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 sleeve crackers (Saltines, Ritz, etc. You pick your favorite.)
4 eggs
2 Tbs. parsley flakes
Salt and pepper to taste

Defrost the crab meat and chop into
bite-sized chunks.

Crush a sleeve of crackers
to make 1 1/3 cups.

I used Townhouse crackers because I
had them in the cupboard.  Any cracker will
be delicious.

Whisk together the eggs, mayonnaise, parsley flakes
and salt and pepper.

Stir in the crab meat.

Stir in the cracker crumbs.

Spoon mixture onto a plate in the shape of a patty.

Cover with a sheet of waxed paper,
and spoon on another layer of patties.

You should have three layers with three patties each.
Cover the top with waxed paper
and refrigerate for one hour.

While the patties are chilling,
mix up my easy and SCRUMPTIOUS

Fry the patties in a bit of olive oil...

Until golden brown like this:

Serve with the tartar sauce.

Now that the kids are away at college.
I make the full recipe and heat up
the leftovers for lunch the next day.

YUMMMMY!!!

The sun was shinning bright and I didn't even wear a jacket while I ran errands this day! Okay, it was only 49 degrees out and I probably should have, but I was so excited the snow was melting I had to layer and go! It was casual enough to run around in during the afternoon and also nice enough to have a few friends over for Chinese food!
I was just given this scarf from my mother-in-law and I absolutely love it! I have never been a huge scarf person, but maybe now I might be! I love the easy breeziness of this look!

Punggol Noodles In Kovan With Video

I have long heard of this very remarkable noodle place in Kovan called Punggol Noodles, and had been waiting to try their noted meatball noodles for quite some time now.

Unfortunately, their business is so good that they usually close after lunch, which means we had to get there very early one weekend just to savor this noodle delicacy.

The owner of this stall has been dubbed the one armed swordsman, due to the fact that he has lost his right hand in an accident.

What is remarkable that he has through adversity, come out even stronger to manage and run such a notable noodle stall, which is incredibly inspirational. But, let's get down to the food itself.

Mee Kia

The mee kia that came with it had a topping of sliced mushrooms. The noodles were slightly above average and had a slight dryness, but was otherwise good. The portion was generous and there was a healthy serving of bean sprouts to go along.

Mee Pok

The mee pok was similar to the mee kia, but had a slightly chewy texture to it as we did not consume it immediately. I would presume if you eat it immediately, the noodles would be just fine. It did had an al dente feel to it and tasted very much like an Italian tagliatelle.

Meatball Soup

The meatball soup was the definite highlight and star of the meal. We had our noodles dry, so it came served in a separate bowl, and what an enormous bowl it was!

The soup itself was naturally sweet as I believe they used ti poh fish in it, and that gave the broth a natural sweetness without any artificial flavoring.

Delicious Meatballs

The meatballs were handmade by the swordsman himself and they were beautifully tender. Also consisting of ti poh fish, the meatballs were equally sweet and flavorful and had such a lovely texture when you bite into one of these delightful balls.

The One Armed Swordsman and His Disciples

Watching the swordsman running his stall was truly fascinating. He was very jovial and chatty with his customers, and he has been training his team to cook the noodles of late. I understand that when he personally cooks, the noodles will be even more spectacular!

For the most part, if you enjoy a good bak chor mee, or mee pok, Punggol Noodles is something you should try simply for the meatballs, which in itself, is a superb revelation.
