Thye Moh Chan Cake House - A Piece of Singapore History About to be Lost Forever With Video

Traditional chinese pastry shops are rare these days, and as time passes, they will get even less, which is a very sad reality.

Last week, I was proud to present Tong Heng here, and it is heartwarming to see that its present generation of owners continuing to preserve its legacy.

Today, however, I am blogging about a different view of another traditional bakery.

Thye Moh Chan has been in operation for 70 years, which in itself, is no simple feat. And till today, they continue to sell very traditional tau sa pia and peanut brittle.

Being very much a Teochew heritage, these sumptuous pastries will be sorely missed. Shops like these are being rapidly replaced by the likes of BreadTalk at every corner. Commercialism and marketing seems to be the victor against good old fashioned tradition and effort.

Black Sesame Cake

This very classic and hard to find black sesame cake was once called the poor man's mooncake. Now we think of mooncakes as baked beauties or delicate snowskin creations from hotel chefs.

This simple but tasty cake holds it own charm and seeing the folks making this by hand, one can really taste the great tradition behind this classic dessert.

Traditional Mooncakes

They also carry the much more familiar mooncakes you find in most of Singapore, and yet they also retain a certain rustic appeal about them. Again, seeing the people in the shop working this one by one by hand with a certain Swiss precision was certainly very eye-opening for me.

Baking the tau sa pia

Walking through the entire shop, and seeing the behind the scenes, gave me an atmosphere that I was back in pre-war time Singapore. Where everything was done manually, using traditional methods and ovens and beating out the pastries by hand.

65 year old owner, Koh Hong Chua

So, why is it that this post sounds so melancholic, almost somber like. Well, it is because the 65 year old owner, Koh Hong Chua, will retire after next week and will end the business for good.

Although he has been in this business for the longest time, and being the third generation in his family to carry on the legacy, the legacy will, sadly, have to end.

He has mentioned to me that his children are pursuing other career interests and hence, he wants to retire and enjoy the good life. Which is more than deserved, and judging by the number of loyal customers he has during my visit there, it will be very missed.

I hope whoever reads this will take the effort to go to this quaint little shop and check it out before it closes. This is a little piece of Singapore history that is about to be lost. Forever.

Tribal print maxi

Maxi Dress: Forever 21
Body suit: H&M
Ring: Pree Brulee
Necklace: Discovery
Earrings: Whimsy Lane
Wedges: Forever 21

This dress comes with a story. My sister-in-law bought it for herself and then decided she didn't want it. I (being the helpful person that I am) took it off her hands. ;)
I wanted to belt it, but the hubby said it didn't look right belted. That's the last time I listen to him because now all I see when I look at these pics is the lack of belting!! lol
I guess this just means you'll be seeing it again and next time I will style it how I want. I also can't wait to wear it with a knit over it in the fall. Lots of outfit opportunities!

Now about the jewelry. All 3 items I am wearing are priced under $7!! LOVE affordable pieces that look great!

VMAs 2011

Louise Roe

The Video Music Awards aired on MTV last night. As for the fashion, I can't really say there was anything outstanding for me. I had a couple of favorites like Louise Roe - her outfit was a little too daytime for event, but I still like the dress; Kelly Rowland's dress actually seemed normal and not outrageous; I can't believe I'm saying this but I thought Snooki's look was cute - the overall look fits her personality well.

Worst dressed? My pick is Nicki Minaj. I respect her as an artist but this outfit is just crazy!

As for the show, there have been a couple of main topics that people have been buzzing about.

First up - Beyonce announced she was pregnant on the red carpet. Congrats, mama-to-be! And Lady Gaga introduced us to her alter ego, Joe Calderone. To be honest, it became a little creepy (especially when she introduced Britney).

Adele was totally robbed from winning those awards, and Tyler, the Creator won best new artist. I must be getting old, because I have no idea who he is.

And the Britney tribute?! It was so short and awkward - definitely overpowered by Lady Gaga + Beyonce. The little girls who danced & dressed as Britney was somewhat inappropriate but kinda adorable. At least the Amy Winehouse tribute was a lot better (probably my favorite part of the night).

What did you all think about MTV VMA's?

iPad Music and GarageBand Workshop at Woodland RC Zone 1

Making music on the iPad has been so fulfilling and satisfying over the last couple of months, having been featured in the media as well.

As I am now working on the follow-up to Silverfish, I was also approached by some friends and other enthusiasts who felt I should consider conducting some lessons on music using the iPad.

Again, I have to reiterate that while I am not a professional musician or composer, there has been a significant portion of positive feedback on my music so far that I have decided to proceed with a iPad music workshop to see if teaching music is something I would like to do.

This workshop has been graciously arranged by the RC Committee at Woodlands Zone 1 RC and the details are as follows:

Ipad Music Appreciation Workshop

Location: Blk 832, Woodlands St 83, Woodlands Zone 1 RC.

This workshop is a 2 hour session, whereby attendees will get to understand the fundamentals of making using on the iPad using GarageBand.

Some of the things that will be covered during this workshop include:

- Understanding the interface of GarageBand
- Using Instruments and Smart Instruments
- Playing a short segment of music
- Recording a voice segment
- Playing with loops

This workshop will enable attendees to understand the workings of GarageBand and will serve as a platform for a subsequent full 10 hour GarageBand course.

I do believe that learning music is now so much easier and more affordable with devices like iPad and software like GarageBand. Hopefully, this will be the springboard of a music movement here that I can be proud to be apart of.

To register, simply email to woodlandszone1@gmail.com with your name and particulars and someone will get in touch with you. The fee for the workshop is S$20.

I also leave you with a track for my follow-up album to Silverfish. This one is called "Chocolate Caviar".

Hurricane Irene

Well, I'm glad to say that I survived Hurricane Irene. It seemed as though it didn't hit a few places as bad as they predicted - although other places were hit pretty harsh. The most damage I encountered was just some flooding in my basement, but no power outages or any damage caused by trees or debris. I do know a few people who have lost their power though, some in nearby neighborhoods.

It was the first time New York City shut down for a storm; public transportation stopped running at a certain time, some streets were closed, and I believe a few bridges were also closed after a certain point.

Luckily a lot of us prepared ahead of time. Essentials like flashlights, batteries, food, munchies, water, gas etc. were bought. Some boarded or taped windows.

So, how did everyone do during Hurricane Irene?

I hope you all are safe & sound!

Latest Obsession: Nars- Illuminator

Photobucket
I am obsessed with this face illuminator! I bought it in the shade orgasm (which is darker then I thought I'd like, but I was surprised that I LOVED it in this shade), and use it not only on my face, but also on my collar bones and sometimes my shoulders too. I just love how it looks and picks up light in pictures and in real life of course! ;) I highly recommend you try this stuff. And it last FOREVER! I've been using mine for 2 months and it barely looks used. Just a dab will do you!

Nars: $29 Sephora

Hope you love it as much as I do!

my love and hate relationship with rompers

Romper: Agaci (swap C/O Kaitlyn)
Shoes: Jessica Simpson
Earrings: Jewelmint
Pink Bracelet: Express
Gold links bracelet: Banana Republic
Heart Ring: Jewelmint
Large Gold Ring: Banana Republic
Gold band: Kohls

Okay, so I love rompers until you need to go to the bathroom! lol Seriously though, this one is hot, but every time I had "go", I had to undo the top buttons on my neck, unzip the side, and slide it down. NOT FUN! ;) See, we have a love hate relationship!
What do you guys think of rompers? Amazing or just not realistically functional? For me, it's a little bit of both! ;) Having said that, this one made me feel great about myself and that's what clothes are supposed to do right?! So it did do it's job..... ;)
