Hock Lam Popular Beef Kway Teow, Formerly From Purvis Street With Video

I used to frequent this very well known beef noodle stall a decade ago when I was working near Suntec CIty, and would always take the effort to walk across Beach Road to reach Purvis Street.

Now, they have moved behind to Seah Street just next to Naomi Hotel, and has a brand new look and interior decor, which is a far cry from their old furnishings over at Purvis.

Apparently, the prices have also been revised due to the newer rent and decor, but the beef kway teow was what we were here for, and thankfully, little has changed.

Dry Beef Kway Teow

The dry based beef kway teow was the star of the show and it certainly did not disappoint. The beef gravy was as how I remembered it, very flavorsome and fragrant and tasting just the right amount of garlic to give the noodles a nice kick. The peanut shavings were wonderfully crunchy and added much to the overall bowl.

My main gripe, as I have with almost every beef noodle place in Singapore, was the beef slices themselves. Though generous, they were always overcooked and it was the same here. It presented a tough nature but was still palatable in the end.

Beef Kway Teow Soup

The soup version was quite similar, but the broth had a lighter beef flavor and less savory, but was otherwise very welcoming on a cold rainy day, which was the case that day. The beef slices were still tough, but when you had such great broth to warm the soul, this worked out great indeed.

Personally, I am not really a beef noodle person, and I hardly take beef noodles elsewhere. But Hock Lam represents a taste of nostalgia for me as this was my frequent and favorite lunch outing for quite some time, and I am glad that this wonderful tradition is still preserved, albeit with better surroundings and a higher price tag.
